Meet the “Neo-Kawaii” band — Chai

Meet a band with an empowering message.

In Japan the Kawaii aesthetic can cause a lot of anxiety and social pressure on individuals, and young women in particular. However a new concept started by the band Chai is challenging this.

Although composed of 4 women, don’t think of them as a girl-band. Just call them a band, and leave it at that. Through their, music Chai wants its audience to know “it’s important to love yourself, whatever complexes you may have against yourself and whatever the social standard may be.” This is what “Neo-Kawaii” is and they showcase this concept through what they call “complex is art”.

Hailing from Nagoya, Japan, Chai’s members include identical twins Mana and Kana on vocal/keys and guitar, respectively, as well as Yuna on drums and Yuuki on bass. Since their formation in 2012, CHAI independently released 2 EP’s titled, Hottaraka Series and Homegoro Series. Chai is now signed with Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Inc., and Burger Records in the US and Heavenly Recordings in the UK. In February of 2018 Chai released their first album “Pink”.

Having performed across the US in 2017 as part of “Japan-Nite”, Chai returned to SXSW in Austin Texas in March of 2018. Chai is once again returning to this US, as well as Scotland. Be sure not to miss this unique band.
